Guidelines for Inclement Weather

INSTRUCTIONS FOR CLASSES UNDER INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS

When tropical cyclones and heavy persistent rain affect Hong Kong, the following arrangements will apply:

1. When Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No.8 or above or a Red/Black Rainstorm Warning is issued, all classes will be suspended, and students are not required to go to school.

2. During continuous heavy rain and thunderstorms, if the Hong Kong Observatory does not issue the above signal, and the Education Bureau has not announced the suspension of classes, students should attend classes as usual. However, if the weather, roads and traffic conditions in their area of residence or where the school is located (Yuen Long) are bad, parents could exercise their discretion in deciding whether or not to send their children to school. For those who do not return to school, parents must inform the school by phone and submit a letter with details and reasons for leave. Allowance will be given to the affected students for lateness or absence on the day of inclement weather or flooding and such students will not be penalized for that reason. If students do not return to school for tests or examinations due to such circumstances, the school will arrange make-up exams.

3. If the “suspension of class” announcement is issued while the students are on their way to school,

  • students should consider the current road or traffic conditions, and their own safety first, and decide whether to continue to school, return home, or take shelter in a safe place.
  • even if the school is not holding classes, the students arriving at the school should remain in the school until the situation is safe and the school will make the necessary arrangements for the students to go home.

4. If the class suspension signal is issued during the school hours,

  • students should stay in the school, and the school will follow the instructions of the Education Bureau to allow the students go home under appropriate and safe circumstances. Students should abide by all arrangements announced by the school.
  • in the event of the above situation, the school will, in principle, make arrangements for students to leave in accordance with the "Class Arrangement in the event of Tropical Cyclones and Heavy Persistent Rain" form filled out by parents.

5. If the “suspension of class” announcement is made due to heavy persistent rain during school periods, students should continue the lessons until the end of the normal school hours and return home provided that it is safe to do so. Parents do not need to pick up their children from school.

6. During the test or examination period, if there is a suspension of classes, the test or examination on the day will be cancelled, and another date for the test or examination will be rescheduled. On the class resumption day, the test or examination will be carried out according to the original schedule without adjustments.
